FIND TRANQUILITY AT THE
HUNTINGTON LIBRARY

OPEN YEAR-ROUND

The Japanese practice the art of “forest bathing,” finding restoration and balance by spending time in nature. Reconnect with your inner peace by touring the vibrant grounds of the San Marino estate. The 120 acres encompass 16 themed gardens, including the California Garden, Australia Garden and Rose Garden, with the spring bloom just beginning. The gardens are home to more than 16,000 species, more than any other botanical garden in the world.

Other notable botanical gardens include the South Coast Botanic Garden on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanical Garden. Tickets to the Huntington Library Botanical Gardens must be booked in advance, and indoor space and galleries remain closed.*

The month-long exhibition, now in its seventh year, showcases large-scale work and creativity across styles and techniques. Past featured artists include Paul McCarthy, Laurie Simmons and Jack Pearson.

VENTURE ON A SPRING HIKE

While LA’s temperate climate guarantees optimal hiking conditions year-round (see our guide to the best winter hikes in Santa Monica), spring hikes abound with explosions of wildflowers and a lush, refreshed landscape.

FOR A GREAT PHOTO OPP

Situated on a 500-foot peak, the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook enchants with expansive, picture-perfect views of L.A. Reaching the top requires climbing up 260 stone steps; bring shoes that are comfortable to walk in. The urban park showcases the vibrance and diversity of native fauna, and shares exhibits depicting the area’s history and restoration.

For a classic Instagram shot and to raise your heartbeat, take the 2.7-mile roundtrip trail at Runyon Canyon, a mainstay trip for visitors and locals with iconic skyline views.

FOR A DAY OUTDOORS

The Rivas Canyon Trail winds 4.6 miles through the Santa Monica Mountains, granting new perspectives with views of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Bay. With limited elevation gains, it’s ideal for all skill levels and its chaparral-studded topography, diversions through woodlands and ocean views deliver immediate rewards. For sunset views, plan an evening hike — and refresh afterwards with a cocktail at Sunset Terrace.

The trail can be accessed at either the Temescal Gateway Park Trailhead or the Will Rogers State Park Trailhead. Note that to reduce crowding, limited parking is available to the public.

At Oceana, we’d be delighted to design an itinerary of the best things to do in LA this spring to create your dream vacation. Visit us to indulge in Santa Monica’s endless golden hours.
